I believe that Anthony Hopkins’ role as Stevens is one of the most outstanding performances in his impressive body of work. This is probably reinforced by the fact that he was accompanied by Emma Thompson, who was just as brilliant. Many years ago, when I first saw the story of the perfect butler, whose sole purpose in life was to keep Darlington Hall in immaculate order, my initial thoughts were “how meagre, limited, and hopeless his world is!”. But as time passed, I began to grow more and more fond of this character; I noticed hints of nostalgia and sadness, but also rebelliousness in the face of fate. This may sound cliché, but I began to see him in a more human way. I believe that before reading Alison Maloney’s “Life Below Stairs,” you absolutely have to watch “The Remains of the Day” to see the full picture. I did.
